Collection: Sue Smythe

Sue is an accomplished weaver based in Leigh. Sue learnt her craft from local kuia, Connie Marsden. Connie introduced her to a group of Māori elders who met weekly in Wellsford. This group encouraged Sue to pursue her interest in natural flax & kete Whakairo.

Sue’s interest lies in exploring the qualities of natural flax. Her preference is to experiment with patterns through natural flax rather than the use of dyes & she is endlessly fascinated by the ever-changing nature of flax. Sue says, “the flax has its own mind”.  Sue is dedicated to handmade objects. She has an enduring admiration for all the master weavers, especially the Hetet family & Te Kanawa.

“All my learning has been done amongst Māori people & all Māori protocol is adhered to always. We always began & ended each session with karakia & waiata. A strict protocol was always adhered to when harvesting the flax.“

We are proud to support, Sue Smythe!
