Arapo Whata
Arapo began his journey in the Māori arts as a student of whakairo (wood carving) at Rotorua Boys High School. He later advanced his craft under the expert guidance of Lewis Gardiner and Stacy Gordine at Te Puia, eventually graduating to secure a position as a junior carver within Gardiner’s professional studio.
Deeply passionate about his heritage, Arapo is dedicated to the lifelong study of traditional arts. His current focus is to fully immerse himself in the world of pounamu carving, constantly refining his skills and technical precision.
Arapo is a staunch advocate for the preservation of Māori culture. He envisages a long future dedicated to educating both himself and others about the significance of pounamu, ensuring that the knowledge and wairua of this taonga are carried forward for many years to come.
We are proud to support Arapo and his journey in the arts!
