Collection: Mary Schollum

Mary (Mollie) Schollum is originally from Puhoi. She began working with clay in 2015 and in 2021 relocated to Otepoti, Dunedin to study ceramics at the Dunedin School of Art. She is currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Visual Arts in ceramics.

Mary’s processes are intuitive, recognising that clay was once a living organism, and
allowing the material to find its own path. This leads to very different styles of work.
The natural beauty of Aotearoa influences her more organic works, small bowls that have
leaves and flowers pressed into the clay are then painstakingly hand painted and often
finished with gold.

Mary's sculptural pieces often contain seaweed dipped in clay or wrapped around the work and references the wildness of the Otepoti coastline.
In vivid and direct contrast, the explosion of colour and glaze that make up her gloopy multi-fired works aim to catch the melt of glaze in motion.

The process of making pushes both the clay and the glaze to the limits. Layered in different glaze recipes and fired up to 10 times, these pieces are joyful, exuberant and impossible to replicate.
