Te Ihu O Te Kore | Medina Koni and Taru Hedger
Medina Koni presents a powerful, collaborative masterpiece in Te Ihu o Te Kore, co-created alongside her son, Taru. This striking artwork marks the exact intersection of their two practices seamlessly blending traditional Māori weaving with contemporary graffiti art.
The outer hue was intuitively cut by her son along its natural drying lines, creating a vibrant, painted shell.
Inside, Koni has nested a delicate sphere of woven muka fibre containing a smaller hue, from which a red muka umbilical cord emerges to symbolise origin, connection, and lineage.
Guided by their tūpuna, this deeply narrative sculpture captures the moment where past meets future, bringing a sophisticated cultural resonance to any contemporary space.
