Part of Mary Schollum's Vessels of Excess series, Carnival I celebrates abundance through an array of soft pastel glazes flowing across a wide-brimmed vessel. Layers of colour melt, pool, and drip in beautifully unpredictable ways, creating a surface that feels playful, expressive, and full of movement.

Drawing on the idea that beauty can be found in excess rather than restraint, Schollum embraces material generosity and the spontaneous nature of glaze in motion. The result is a one-of-a-kind ceramic work that is both sculptural and joyful, inviting the eye to linger over its rich textures and delicate palette.

Each work in the series may be fired up to ten times, placing considerable demands on both the clay and the glaze. As a result of this intensive process, these vessels are intended as sculptural artworks and should not be considered watertight.
