Aramoana 9 | Mary Schollum
Part of Mary Schollum's Aramoana – Pathway to the Sea Series, Aramoana 9 explores the meeting point between land and ocean through material, process, and memory.
Inspired by the coastline of Aramoana beach, this series draws on the traces left by the sea: seaweed, tides, and shifting currents; Schollum creates ceramic works that reflect both fragility and resilience. Natural forms become collaborators in the making process, with organic textures and impressions captured within the clay to preserve fleeting moments from the coastal landscape.
Unlike the others in the series, Aramoana 9 features a smaller halo of seaweed and a larger base. The coral-like ceramic is the main feature of the sculpture, layered with light teal and sea-foam colours that create the feeling of a fragile ocean bloom. The flowing forms and subtle textures echo the movement of tides and the ever-changing nature of the coastline.
Through the dialogue between organic forms, ceramic materials, and the unpredictable marks of the kiln, Schollum creates a unique record of transformation. The Aramoana Series celebrates the connection between land and sea, permanence and impermanence, and the quiet beauty found at the ocean’s edge.
