Te Rau-o-te-Huia ~ The Treasured Possession of Te Huia
Aimee Gruar | 11 - 16 June
This exhibition celebrates love, remembrance and the beauty of the iconic Huia bird, particularly its unique tail feathers.
Gruar's art pieces, intricately crafted from vintage fabric sourced through second-hand suppliers, aim to encourage viewers to reflect on their impact on the natural world and the importance of sustainable practices.
By focusing on remembrance, she not only preserves the memory of the Huia but also offers a powerful commentary on the interconnectedness of cultural heritage and ecological responsibility.
Mandalas
Used by various cultures to represent wholeness and completion, the circular shape of mandalas can be interpreted as a symbol of the universe.
Inspired by the tail feathers of the iconic Huia bird, these mandalas feature 12 individually sewn feathers which are created with vintage materials sourced from charity shops, garage sales, and Trademe.
Feathers
Finding a feather is a very personal experience which will provide a unique meaning for each person depending on their circumstances.
Often seen as signs from loved ones who have transitioned to non-physical realms, because of their connection to birds, feathers can also represent flight and freedom.
In Māori culture, the Huia feather symbolizes leadership and mana, and they were historically given as expressions of honour and respect.
