Collection: Medina Koni

Ngāpuhi Nui Tonu te Iwi, Ngāti Hao rāua ko Ngāti Hau, ko Ngāti Kaharau ngā hapū

Medina Koni is a Māori weaver whose practice is grounded in the tradition of raranga (weaving), a craft she first learned alongside her grandmothers (kuia). Her lineage is Ngāpuhi Nui Tonu, with her whānau roots in Ōmanaia.

Medina was raised in Kaikohe and describes her eventual return to weaving as a spiritual pull—he karanga wairua—a commitment rekindled by the memory of learning under her grandmothers' guidance. She has returned with her husband and tamariki (children) to own the very house she grew up in Kaikohe.

Her work is a continuation of that intergenerational knowledge. Through raranga, Medina honours her heritage, contributing to the living art of Māori weaving. Her practice reflects a deep respect for whakapapa (genealogy/heritage), materials, and process, keeping tradition alive through contemporary hands.

We are proud to support Medina!
