Nga Kohikohinga | Medina Koni
This evocative piece is a taonga, born from the resilience and unity of the community following Cyclone Gabrielle.
Ngā Kohikohinga is an artwork that binds together Rawa Māori (traditional resources) and whakapapa (heritage), standing as a testament to enduring through challenge.
The piece takes the form of a simple fan—a "call to action" and a reprieve from loss. The fanning action is symbolic, designed to fan the fire within the individual and without in their community and land.
A beautifully smooth hue (gourd) forms the handle, intentionally connecting the fan to Hine Pū Te Hue - the goddess associated with calming storms - and features handmade flax paper that is the screen and muka surround.
This is a profound work of art that embodies calm after the storm.
