Collection: David McLeod

Born & raised in the South Island, Dunedin-based jeweller David McLeod explores narrative themes in his work, bringing to life the maker's perspective. He typically uses metal, stone, shell, & other carved & constructed elements. His whimsical burnt/live matchstick range celebrates the match, which despite the advent of the gas lighter, continues to be used both as a fire starter & as a material of creation & expression.

David attended art school in Dunedin in the seventies majoring in sculpture & subsequently went on to teach at various tertiary institutions in the South Island whilst continuing a career as a sculptor. In 1998, he completed his MFA in jewellery at Monash University where he studied the history & influence on Australian & New Zealand jewellery practice of the Japanese arts of Netsuke, Ojime, & Inro (miniature sculptures & miniature detailing on small boxes). He left a long-term lecturing role in 2000 to pursue jewellery full time, setting up Shed Workspace with a good friend & mentor, Blair Smith. In 2007, he set up Quadrant Gallery in Dunedin with Anne Jackman, which they ran for fourteen years.

Now semi-retired, David is enjoying the freedom that his hard work has afforded him. He continues to teach part-time from his workshop where he enjoys the stimulation of diverse ideas & motivations. He looks forward to exploring & revisiting earlier works & giving form to unresolved projects. Additionally, he can go home when he wants to!

His work is held in many private collections & in the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington.

We are proud to support, David Mcleod!
