Amber Smith is a self-taught ceramist & printmaker based in Nelson.Smith's artworks are distinctive, within both mediums, Amber Smith features repetitive motifs - native birds, Koru & words. The use of Māori Whakataukī (Proverbs) & waiataaroha (songs about the nature of love) have an emotional resonance & become a part of the image itself.
Smith is well known for her detailed, handbuilt vessels & bowls, etched in Sgraffito (a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour). Every ceramic piece created is unique in form & design. Amber Smith's print collection ranges from limited edition to open edition.
Amber uses her art as an exploration of her wairua (spirit) & what it means to come from Aotearoa (New Zealand).
