STEP INSIDE THE STUDIO - GLEN HUTCHINS

WHO IS GLEN HUTCHINS?
Glen Hutchins is a painter that creates through Automatism - the performance of actions without conscious thought or intention. Hutchins' paintings are expressions of energy & movement. The lack of limitations & boundaries allows Glen the opportunity to explore the act of painting & the materiality of the work freely.

Glen Hutchins appreciates the random incidents that occur by intuition & chance, as he works with his medium. The created lines & colours invade the space, leaving an impression of energy & movement - empowering the medium to speak for itself & have its own presence. Hutchins' enjoys working with both traditional & industrial mediums to produce his works.

Having completed his Masters in Fine Arts, Glen Hutchins has gained recognition for his painting approach & distinct style.

"I love that art engages the viewer - it has the ability to make you think & challenge your individual perception. For me, the art of painting is a physical process of exploration & discovery". - Glen Hutchins

WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE LATEST ARTWORKS YOU CURRENTLY HAVE DISPLAYED WITHIN THE POI ROOM?
I have been looking at combinations of colour based on album covers of artists I like - blue/red, green/red, orange/blue - I wanted the work to be direct, raw & not rehearsed. I've been reading Charles Bukowski, Kurt Vonnergut & Mark Lanegan's recent autobiography which have enforced the power of simplicity & rawness.

I have used a range of materials - acrylic, spray paint, polyurethane & oil paint. For me, the physical process of painting is important & pushing the materials I am working with so you can see where paint has been scraped, pushed or wiped away.

YOUR PREVIOUS STUDIO SADLY BURNT DOWN, HOW HAVE YOU GROWN & DEVELOPED AS AN ARTIST FROM THAT EXPERIENCE?
It was pretty devastating at the time but as a result of losing all my work & materials, I had to start from scratch & create a whole new body of work which I actually enjoyed doing as I was starting afresh. I slowly went about completing hundreds of drawings & collages which progressed to these recent works. People were really kind - I was given materials & a studio space until I got set up again.

YOU HAVE A NEW STUDIO - TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT IT!
My new studio is in the top floor of Space Studio & Gallery, which is in an Old Heritage building that has recently been renovated. Its near the river & its a quiet space with a few other artists & I get the chance to focus on my work.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT WORKING & LIVING IN AOTEAORA - NEW ZEALAND?
Whanganui is an easy place to live & be an artist - I get increasingly drawn back to the landscape - particularly the west coast beaches & the steep valleys around the Whanganui River area. I love the West Coast of the North Island, National Park & the Whanganui River Road & the fact they are right on my doorstep. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time painting landscapes on sight whether it was on a farm or the side of a road up the river & I want to get back to this...time permitting!
