Pōhutukawa Play Vase

Pōhutukawa Play Vase | Emma Walker

Welcome a striking piece of Aotearoa's contemporary art scene into your home with this magnificent Pōhutukawa Play Vase by homegrown ceramicist Emma Walker.

Designed with a unique sculptural form, this incredible ceramic creation offers a bold visual anchor thanks to its intensely textured surface. Richly applied layers of crisp white, deep black, and vibrant summer reds bring the meticulously hand-sculpted botanical details vividly to life.

In the artist's words, "The pōhutukawa is perhaps my favourite of New Zealand’s native trees. Its brilliant red flowers herald the arrival of summer and Christmas, evoking a sense of home, family and time spent together. This vessel is a personal celebration of a tree so deeply woven into our New Zealand identity.

Using the traditional sgraffito technique, I have carved through layers of underglaze to reveal the flowers and foliage, capturing something of the vibrancy and enduring beauty of this much-loved coastal tree."

The masterful addition of a high-gloss glaze catches the light perfectly, ensuring every single sculpted element captures the eye against a moody backdrop.
