Ōnewa Patterned Toki | Dean Marjoribanks
Ōnewa, Te Tairāwhiti
Handcrafted by Dean Marjoribanks, this Toki is carved from Ōnewa (New Zealand riverstone) sourced from Te Tairāwhiti. Valued for its earthy tones and smooth, natural character, Ōnewa has been used for generations in the creation of tools and taonga. Intricate pattern work carved across the front adds texture and reflects the care and precision of the artist's hand.
The clean rectangular form and bevelled edge honour the enduring simplicity of traditional toki design. Finished with a single-hole binding and adjustable black cord, the pendant is designed to showcase the natural beauty of the stone and its finely carved detail.
Meaning of the Toki
The origin shape; the toki (adze) is a traditional Māori symbol of strength, determination, skill, and leadership. Historically used for carving and shaping, it represents purpose, resilience, and the ability to overcome challenges.
Worn as a taonga, the toki carries a connection to knowledge, perseverance, and the strength passed through generations.
