Kākahi | Anna Hayes-Moeau
In Kākahi, Anna Hayes-Moeau pays tribute to the indigenous freshwater mussel, a species currently facing global decline. This wide, architectural panel is woven from harakeke (NZ native flax), utilising finely split fibers to achieve a delicate, high-density texture.
The central band features the Takitahi pattern, a universal "one-and-one" weave that symbolises our global connectedness. Flanking this core is the Papakirango pattern, representing guardianship and protection.
The resulting square motifs create a rhythmic visual of mussels in abundance a hopeful reflection on conservation and environmental restoration.
Housed in a substantial panoramic black shadow box, this original work is a sophisticated statement of ecological awareness and Māori heritage.
