Jade Pūrerehua with Puhoro design, on a rosewood bas

Jade Pūrerehua on a Rosewood Base | Mike Cameron

Enrich your living space with the hypnotic voice of Aotearoa through this extraordinary Jade Pūrerehua on a Rosewood Base, masterfully created by New Zealand artist Mike Cameron.

The Pūrerehua is a traditional Māori wind instrument.  The sound of the Pūrerehua was used as a rainmaker believing the eerie vibrations could elicit tears from Ranginui ( sky farther  ).

During times of food shortage, players used vibrational mimicry to lure lizards out of hiding by making the buzzing sounds of insects. Associated with Tāwhirimātea ( the god of winds ) the instrument was used during karakia ( prayer) to connect the player to ancestors,  nature and the spiritual realm. It was also sounded at tangi ( funerals) to help farewell the dead.

The pūhoro design shows speed and agility. The dynamic, flowing lines symbolize swiftness, movement, and athletic power.

The curves mimic water currents, ocean waves, and the natural elements. As a visual map of whakapapa, it connects the holder to their ancestors, heritage, and ocean journeys.

Inspired by the traditional Māori instrument that produces a deep, whirring hum when swung, this striking piece bridges ancient sound traditions with modern artistic elegance.

Expertly hand-sculpted in a luminous green hue, the blade-like form sits gracefully atop a rich rosewood stand, serving as a powerful focal point of both cultural story and fine craftsmanship.

Mike Cameron, an established Multi-Media Artist based in Aotearoa's Northland, created this piece. Mike approaches his work with careful planning and integrity, using rangahau (research) as the basis for all his artworks.

Make this rare piece of New Zealand heritage the centerpiece of your collection today and bring an authentic echo of local tradition into your home.
