Myth In Motion | Emma Walker
In this stunning wheel-thrown white stoneware vase, Emma Walker presents an imagined seascape where mermaids, octopuses, and shifting aquatic forms move in a seamless, swirling dance.
Part of the Becoming Myth series, this work serves as a poignant meditation on biodiversity, suggesting that the rapid changes in our natural world may soon relegate today’s living species to the realm of memory and folklore.
Walker utilizes the sgraffito technique to wrap the narrative around the vessel’s curved form, carving intricate details through layers of deep blue underglaze into the unfired clay.
The visual depth is enhanced by a selective clear glaze, which creates a sophisticated play between high-gloss focal points and soft, matte backgrounds.
By leaving the carved line work exposed, Walker adds a tactile, sculptural dimension to the scene, capturing the fluid energy of a world in constant motion.
