Pōhutukawa Joy 2 | Emma Walker
In this sculptural wheel-thrown and hand-built white stoneware vessel, Emma Walker continues her celebration of the seasonal metamorphosis of the Pōhutukawa tree.
By blending functional ceramic forms with the "sublime" beauty of nature, Walker seeks to elevate the everyday object into a reflection of life’s transient and extraordinary moments.
The work features a striking division of style: one side showcases the fiery filaments of the Pōhutukawa bloom built up with brush-on underglazes, while the other presents delicate blue floral motifs against the natural white of the clay.
The interior and the intricate, ribbon-like hand-built base are finished in a deep, glossy crimson, echoing the vibrant life force of a New Zealand summer. This piece serves as a tactile reminder of the beauty found in the constant unfolding of the natural world.
