Pōhutukawa Joy 1 | Emma Walker
In this vibrant wheel-thrown and hand-built white stoneware piece, Emma Walker celebrates the iconic Pōhutukawa, a beloved symbol of summer and Christmas in Aotearoa.
The artist’s intent was to mimic the seasonal transformation of the tree, metamorphosing a simple, functional mug into something sublime.
Walker uses brush-on underglazes to meticulously build and blend the rich reds and yellows of the flowering bloom, set against a striking dark background.
The contrast with the delicate blue floral patterns on the white clay emphasises the "beauty in the everyday transience of life."
Featuring a highly sculptural, hand-built handle with a deep red orb and an intricate, porous base, this work is a joyful tribute to the natural world’s ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.
