In this compelling iteration of the classical form, Strahan Clarke presents a vessel that feels as though it has been forged by the earth itself.

Amphora 1 reimagines the ancient storage silhouette through a lens of geological and organic process, moving away from utility toward a profound sense of sculptural presence.

The surface is alive with a deep, liquid-like glaze that pools in the recesses of a rhythmic, honeycombed texture. The interplay of dark, obsidian tones and warm, amber hues suggests the cooling of volcanic flow or the weathered patterns of tidal erosion.

Resting on its side, the piece emphasises its silhouette over its function, inviting the viewer to contemplate the quiet weight of history and the enduring dialogue between clay and the natural elements of Aotearoa.
