Paula Coulthard's inspiration for Four Eels - the elegant tuna on the hunt.

"I live in Wairarapa. Our landscape is veined with streams & waterways. We have a stream on our land where I often watch a large female tuna cruising & floating effortlessly in the gentle flow. We leave food on the river's edge for her.  

Speaking to the neighbours I have found this is common practice. In another place the same stream is crossed by a bridge. My friend & neighbour feeds them regularly at his place. She drops a cooked chicken carcass from last night's meal on the side of the bank and before long we hear the tuna as they race upstream. As they cross a  broad gravel area the water is shallow & the tuna make a flapping sound as they use the strength of their bodies to cross out of the water. They seize the food in their jaws & spiral in a roiling death roll".
