Alphabet

Alphabet - Lithograph Print | Alexis Neal

In this insightful lithograph, Alexis Neal uses the structured format of a school spelling sheet to explore the layered meanings of "home" and "house."

H For House leans into the aesthetic of mid-century Aotearoa classrooms, using the familiar "H" word list to examine the social and cultural values instilled during childhood.

The work features handwritten additions such as "unaffordable," "shelter," and "security" which contrast sharply with the simplistic vocabulary of the original primer.

Printed in a characteristic oxide red on aged, cream-toned paper, the piece carries an archival weight that suggests a fragment of personal and national history.

By framing these educational tools as art, Neal highlights the subtle ways institutional learning shapes our adult reality.
