In this vibrant wall sculpture, Mike Paora continues his exploration of the Tapatoru (triangle), using the geometric form as a canvas for both cultural narrative and material play.

This circular "tondo" is a rich mosaic where the natural elegance of timber meets the striking, modern energy of turquoise, teal, and sea-foam blue.

Paora expertly balances a suite of premium woods, including Mahogany, Rimu, and Kauri. The warm, golden grains of these timbers are set against the deep, obsidian-like texture of Charred Western Red Cedar.

Each triangular tile is uniquely treated—some featuring fine cross-hatching and carved patterns reminiscent of traditional Māori tukutuku panels, while others showcase the raw, undulating beauty of the wood grain.

The addition of turquoise accents evokes the shimmering coastal waters of Aotearoa, grounding the geometric abstraction in the natural world.

Anchored by a solid band of woven-style charred cedar at the base, this work is a sophisticated tribute to heritage and craftsmanship, making it a standout contemporary statement piece.
