Olivia Wirepa brings a narrative-driven approach to New Zealand’s native birdlife through highly detailed mixed media illustrations.

This original work, titled Superheroes, reimagines a trio of native birds—including the resilient pīwauwau (rock wren) as iconic pop-culture heroes.

The pīwauwau is Aotearoa's only alpine bird, a tiny figure of strength that lives in the Southern Alps and spends its life hopping and bobbing across the rocky ground.

Olivia is intrigued by our fascination with superheroes, noting that even when we grant them extraordinary powers, we almost always draw them in a relatable human form!

This sense of adventure was inspired by watching her young son dress up in flowing capes, stepping into a world filled with power and excitement.

Meticulously rendered using archival ink and watercolour on Hahnemühle paper, the composition features a nostalgic red telephone box that contrasts with the "super" natural charm of the birds.

Presented in a sleek black frame, this piece is a lighthearted celebration of resilience, vulnerability, and the figures that fire our imaginations.
