Ripeka

In Ripeka, Anna Hayes-Moeau utilises the resilient fibers of harakeke (NZ native flax) to create a powerful meditation on resilience and spiritual protection.

The panel features two distinct weaving patterns that intersect to form a central cross—a symbol widely recognised for victory through suffering. The background is composed of the Takitahi weave, a universal "over one, under one" pattern that represents the fundamental strength found in human connectedness.

Intersecting this is the vertical Papakirango pattern, a motif deeply representative of guardianship and the protective embrace of the land.

Set within a bold black shadow box, the raw texture and natural earthy tones of the harakeke are given a contemporary prominence.

It is a unified statement piece that honours the endurance of the spirit and the sacred patterns that safeguard our journey.
