Large Heavy Flag - Ngaru through Binoculars | Paula Coulthard
Paula Coulthard evokes the deep mysteries of the moana in this atmospheric, large-scale flag. Crafted from distressed tarpaulin (paint on canvas) the work features a a seascape viewed through your binoculars.
These new works are a continuation of the tarpaulin series but these are Banners painted on new cotton canvas.
The stylistic inspiration for the whale banners is a combination of vintage industrial advertising banners and side show or circus banners.
These works are a celebration of our connection to these magnificent mammals which feature in our cosmology, ancestry, myths, legends and history.
In the case of Ngaru, inspiration was found in scientific and educational photography using the idea of magnification by binoculars as the frame.
A powerful piece for contemplation, celebrating the pure magic of the sea in front of you!
