Tapatoru Series #1 Purple | Mike Paora
In this intricate wall sculpture, Mike Paora explores the geometric precision and cultural significance of the Tapatoru (triangle). This circular "tondo" composition is a vibrant mosaic of hand-crafted triangular forms, celebrating the rich materiality of Aotearoa's timber history.
Paora masterfully assembles a palette of Mahogany, Rimu, and Kauri, allowing the distinct natural grains and golden hues of the wood to contrast against the deep, blackened textures of Charred Western Red Cedar.
These organic tones are punctuated by bold accents of purple, lavender, and deep plum, creating a contemporary dialogue between traditional materials and modern colour.
Each individual element is meticulously finished, with the charred cedar and fine linework evoking traditional Māori weaving and carving motifs.
The result is a dynamic, multi-dimensional work that shifts with the light—a powerful statement piece that bridges the gap between ancestral heritage and geometric abstraction.
