Yobitsugi Style Vase | Aaron Scythe
EXHIBITION : 2BHOLD
Works to hold and behold.
A belief that his art is only fully realised when there is an interaction between the maker and the user inspired Aaron to create this collection of items to be utilised and add beauty to your everyday life.
It also includes pieces that at one time were part of daily Māori life, such as Kete and mere or patu, recreated in Aaron’s signature meld of 16th century Japanese glazing techniques, of which he has become a master.
Sets of cups and tumblers, plates and bowls, large vases and tiny vessels, goblets and glazed mugs all adorned on every surface and ready 2BHOLD.
Inspired by his Māori heritage and the sixteen years he spent living in Japan, Aaron Scythe uses text, imagery, and symbolism to adorn the one of a kind pieces he creates from his studio in Whanganui.
“Yobi” means to call and “tsugi” means to connect. Rather than only using pieces from the original ceramic object, Yobitsugi incorporates “foreign” pieces from other objects to mend the broken ceramic item.
