Hei Tiki #4 | Arapo Whata
In Hei Tiki #4, Arapo Whata continues his exploration of traditional Māori form with a powerful carving that emphasises ancestral connection and spiritual protection. This tiki is masterfully crafted from a lighter, olive-toned pounamu, featuring a soft, matte finish that highlights the stone's natural, cloud-like variations.
The figure is defined by its strong, rounded features and intricate facial detailing. In a beautiful departure from other pieces in the series, the eyes are inlaid with iridescent pāua shell, which catches the light with flashes of blue, green, and silver—a detail often used to represent a "living" gaze and spiritual insight.
The fluid, sculptural limbs and characteristic tilted head showcase Arapo's technical skill and his deep commitment to preserving the wairua of his heritage.
Suspended from a traditional black braided cord, this taonga is a significant statement of cultural pride and a timeless guardian for the wearer.
