The atmospheric mystery of the Hauraki Gulf is captured in this minimalist watercolour study. Meg Cummins explores the iconic silhouette of Rangitoto Island as it sits enveloped in a soft coastal mist, using a muted, earthy palette to convey a sense of quietude and ancient stillness.

Utilising a masterful wet-on-wet technique, the painting depicts the island’s dark, volcanic form bleeding into the surrounding haze and its subtle reflection in the water below.
