Swamp Kauri Kumete | Mat Scott
Handcrafted from ancient swamp kauri, this one-of-a-kind kumete by Mat Scott celebrates the natural forms of Aotearoa. The carved surface carries expressions inspired by the oyster, mussel, and native fauna of Aotearoa, creating a vessel that reflects the connection between land and sea; the materials from which it is formed.
Naturally finished with a food-safe oil, the warm tones and unique grain of the swamp kauri are preserved, allowing the character and history of the timber to shine through. When turned over, the form reveals a beautiful resemblance to the kauri leaf as a subtle tribute to the ancient tree from which this piece was created.
Traditionally used by Māori and across Polynesia for gathering, preparing, and serving food, the kumete is both a functional vessel and a meaningful artwork, honouring craftsmanship, nature, and the enduring stories held within Aotearoa’s native materials.
