Whā | Anna Hayes-Moeau

In Whā, meaning "four," Anna Hayes-Moeau presents a luminous exploration of natural cycles and collective strength. The panel is woven from Pīngao, New Zealand’s endemic golden sand sedge, which retains a brilliant, sun-drenched hue long after it has dried.

The composition is defined by the Takirua pattern, an "over two, under two" weave that symbolizes teamwork and the unity found between differing cultures and perspectives.

Adding a layer of delicate spiritual depth are the muka (flax fiber) details at the base. These fine threads form four distinct peaks and troughs, serving as a poignant reminder of the ebb and flow that governs all things in the natural world.

Set within a sleek black shadow box, Whā is a sophisticated piece of contemporary Māori art.

It balances the bold, architectural quality of the Takirua weave with the ethereal presence of the muka, making it a powerful statement of harmony and heritage.
