Tangiwai Pounamu | Dean Marjoribanks
This beautiful tāonga, or valued item, is titled "Te Tau Ihu o te waka," which translates to "the bow of the waka." It is a profound symbol of direction, leadership, and the journey of life.
Expertly hand-carved by Dean Marjoribanks, a carver with strong genealogical and cultural ties through his Te Whānau ā-Apanui whakapapa.
The pendant is crafted from pounamu from Tangiwai, known for its unique green and translucent qualities.
Dean has a passion for carving tāonga and jewellery in pounamu. His work is deeply inspired by pre-European tāonga Māori, and he sees himself as being part of a long line of carvers and artists.
This piece showcases his passion and knowledge, which he has furthered through a number of academic studies in Māori language, arts, customs, and carving.
