Te Tai Poutini Pounamu | Dean Marjoribanks

This tāonga, or treasured item, is a hand-carved pendant that beautifully showcases the natural and artistic heritage of Aotearoa.

It is made from kawakawa pounamu, a type of greenstone known for its rich, dark green color and distinctive black flecks.

The stone was sourced from Te Tai Poutini, another name for the West Coast of the South Island, the legendary home of pounamu.

The pendant's design is deeply inspired by pre-European tāonga Māori and features an intricate carved pattern.

The artist, Dean Marjoribanks, sees himself as part of a long line of carvers and artists. He has a passion for carving tāonga and jewellery in pounamu and has strong genealogical and cultural ties through his Te Whānau ā-Apanui whakapapa.

A stunning piece.
