Te Tai Poutini Pounamu | Dean Marjoribanks
This tāonga, or valued item, is titled "Te Tai Poutini," another name for the West Coast of the South Island, the legendary home of pounamu.
Expertly hand-carved by Dean Marjoribanks, a carver with strong genealogical and cultural ties through his Te Whānau ā-Apanui whakapapa.
The pendant is crafted from kawakawa pounamu, known for its rich, dark green colour with unique black flecks.
Dean has a passion for carving tāonga and jewellery in pounamu. His work is deeply inspired by pre-European tāonga Māori, and he sees himself as being part of a long line of carvers and artists.
This piece is a testament to Dean's passion and knowledge, which he has furthered through a number of academic studies in Māori language, arts, customs, and carving.
