Taiaha and Wooden Base | Mike Cameron

This striking Taiaha by Mike Cameron is a powerful fusion of traditional Māori weaponry and contemporary artistry. The form follows the customary style—a long wooden shaft tapering to a smooth, rounded point, balanced by an intricately carved head (upoko) featuring a cast glass arero (tongue), symbolising challenge and assertion.

The arero is formed in vibrant orange-toned glass, glowing with energy and intensity. Beneath it, a carved pūkaiora figure rests at the heart of the weapon, offering spiritual protection and connection to ancestral strength. Natural fibres and feathers are bound at the transition point, referencing ceremonial dress and mana.

Crafted from rich hardwood and mounted on a clean wooden base, this piece stands with quiet authority—combining sculptural form, symbolic narrative, and impeccable craftsmanship.

The Taiaha represents more than warfare—it embodies the power of oratory, balance, and wairua (spirit). Mike Cameron brings deep research and reverence to every work, transforming materials into living taonga.
