Patu Maire on Stand | Alex Sands
From the Waikato District, Alex Sands is a carving artist of Māori descent from the tribe Ngāti Kahungunu o Te Wairoa, Aotearoa (New Zealand), and of European descent from England, Scotland and Ireland.
He is part of Sands Carving Studio, where the team brings to life the finest creations of traditional Māori designs and contemporary artistic works.
A patu is a short striking weapon used by both men and women during oratory and warfare. They could be augmented with a longer string wrapped around the hand to create a close-range projectile.
In today’s world, their use is largely ceremonial with orators wielding patu in their left hand, adding weight to their words. The name "Patu Maire" is a unique tribute, as maire are tall forest trees.
This piece is a patu maire, a traditional Māori design, that has been created with a contemporary feel. It is mounted on a beautiful piece of wood for display.
Bring this exceptional creation into your home.
