Parāoa Kotiate on Stand | Finau Katoa
Discover this exquisite Parāoa Kotiate on Stand, a truly unique piece meticulously hand-carved by renowned artist Finau Katoa. This stunning Kotiate (Māori club) showcases the deep cultural heritage of New Zealand.
A Kotiate is a traditional Māori short hand club, primarily used in close-quarter combat. Its distinctive design, often carved from wood or whale bone, features a unique shape that broadly resembles the lobed form of a human liver, which is reflected in its name (koti = cut in two or divide; ate = liver). Kotiate typically have prominent notches on either side of the blade. While they served as formidable striking and thrusting weapons in battle, capable of inflicting severe damage, they were also significant as symbols of status and were often carried by chiefs during speeches and ceremonies, underscoring their dual role as both a practical weapon and a taonga (treasure).
Thoughtfully presented on a matching stand made from native New Zealand timber, this artwork is designed to be a captivating display piece. A subtle perforation at its rounded tip traditionally allowed for attaching a cord, adding to its authentic detail.
This hand-carved Kotiate by Finau Katoa is more than just a decorative item; it's a piece of New Zealand's artistic and cultural legacy, perfect for collectors, art enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a meaningful and beautiful addition to their home or office.
