In this piece, Leonie Sharp explores the rhythmic intersection of rongoā (traditional healing) and the organic, shimmering textures of the natural world.

Kawakawa Series is a sophisticated study in form, utilising a meticulous assembly of layered feathers within the iconic, heart-shaped silhouette of the kawakawa leaf to create a sense of organised energy.

The work is a tactile celebration of Aotearoa’s avian heritage, where the deep forest greens and mottled obsidian tones of the feathers mirror the dappled light of the bush floor.

This organic material is shaped into the architectural lines of the leaf—complete with the characteristic "holes" that signify vitality and health in the wild—adding a structural edge to the crisp white mount.

From the hand-placed plumage that catches the light to the elegant, minimalist stem, this artwork feels like a modern landscape viewed through a traditional lens.

It is a clean, unified statement piece that celebrates the raw, enduring beauty of the forest and the restorative spirit of New Zealand’s native flora.

"This work is made with care using all-natural materials and adhering to all New Zealand Department of Conservation guidelines.  No protected native birds were used in making this artwork. All feathers are from non-protected natives or introduced species. All feathers are natural colours and sourced from renewable resources.

The feathers are washed and dried, and before framing each piece is sprayed with an industrial-grade pyrethrum and sealed airtight.

Please keep out of direct sunlight, as this could cause condensation inside the frame, which can not be removed. The butterflies do not retain moisture and will not lose their colour as they are protected by UV glass, but will be damaged by the moisture from condensation should this occur". - L Sharp
