Mens Piupiu Mumu Design 44

This handcrafted piupiu (traditional Māori waist garment) is the work of artist Teresa Murray, featuring a distinct Mumu Design.

The garment is constructed from lengths of dried flax leaf (harakeke), which have been carefully treated and scraped.

The Mumu Design is a traditional pattern historically used by the Whanganui iwi (tribe)and is said to have been inspired by the game of draughts (checkers) played by whalers and sealers who stopped at the mouth of the Whanganui River in the 1840s.  

The piupiu is worn around the waist and secured with woven ties at the top. It is a striking example of traditional Māori weaving and cultural expression.
