Mended Ties | Emma Walker
In this evocative wheel-thrown and hand-built white stoneware vessel, Emma Walker explores the profound beauty of resilience and environmental renewal.
Part of the Becoming Myth series, Mended Ties is a narrative of persistence, weaving together land and sea imagery to address the tension between ecological damage and the possibility of healing.
The vessel features a intricate seascape meticulously carved using the sgraffito technique through layers of deep blue underglaze.
Most significantly, Walker has explored the Japanese art of Kintsugi to reassemble the piece after fracture.
By highlighting the breaks with lacquer and brass filings, she elevates the scars into a striking feature a quiet act of persistence that echoes the mermaid's gaze across a changing landscape.
The result is a sculptural meditation on biodiversity, where the mended lines serve as a metaphor for our responsibility to repair and protect the natural world.
Note: Due to the Kintsugi restoration process, this piece is not recommended for holding liquid.
