Each piece is completely made by hand and the process takes up to 5 days to complete, making every one unique. The Hei Tiki form is hand-carved, and its unique metal eyes are a modern element that complements the traditional design.

Messini's pieces are about a merging of traditional Toi Māori, in particular whakairo rakau (wood carving) with contemporary mediums such as resin and cast stone and an engaging colour pallet.

The Hei Tiki is one of the most iconic and powerful symbols in Māori culture. It represents a revered ancestor or tupuna, and is worn as a protective talisman and a personal good luck charm. Traditionally, it is believed to embody the first human form.
