Undercurrent | Emma Walker

In this evocative wheel-thrown white stoneware wall plate, Emma Walker explores the profound psychological state of being "held between opposing pulls."

Undercurrent depicts a figure drifting in a suspended struggle, caught in the quiet turbulence of indecision.

It is a powerful exploration of those moments where neither direction offers release, and stillness itself becomes a heavy, palpable weight.

Part of the Becoming Myth series, the work weaves together mythical and living forms to meditate on biodiversity and the rapid environmental changes in Aotearoa.

The scene is meticulously rendered using the sgraffito technique, carving through layers of deep blue underglaze to reveal the pale clay beneath.

By selectively clear-glazing certain elements while leaving others matte and exposed, Walker creates a rich, sculptural texture that mirrors the complex emotional "undercurrents" of the human and natural world.

Group Exhibition: Between Land, Sea and Sky

Bringing together Beth McGill, Emma Walker, Meg Cummins and Strahan Clarke whose practices are deeply connected to the natural environments of Aotearoa, we present this exhibition 'Between Land, Sea and Sky'.
