Still Breath | Emma Walker
In this intricate wheel-thrown white stoneware wall plate, Emma Walker explores the suspended moment between movement and calm.
Part of the Becoming Myth series, the work weaves together ancient, mythical, and living forms to navigate the tension between environmental abundance and loss.
Walker places these figures alongside vulnerable species, creating a meditation on biodiversity in the shadow of climate change.
The scene is brought to life through the sgraffito technique, where Walker carves intricate designs through several layers of blue underglaze into the unfired clay.
By selectively applying a clear glaze, she creates a dynamic interplay between high-gloss details and matte underglaze.
The exposed, unglazed carvings provide a sculptural texture, capturing the "fragile balance" of a world on the edge of change.
