Open Water | Emma Walker
In this evocative wheel-thrown white stoneware wall plate, Emma Walker explores a "quiet letting go," where the self drifts into the expansive, liberating space of the ocean.
As part of the Becoming Myth series, this work meditates on biodiversity and climate change, weaving together living and mythical forms to express both the joy of immersion in nature and the grief of its rapid transformation.
The fluid, aquatic scene is meticulously hand-carved using the sgraffito technique, scratching through layers of deep blue underglaze to reveal the pale clay beneath.
By leaving the carved areas unglazed and applying a clear gloss only to specific elements, Walker creates a rich textural landscape.
The resulting interplay between matte and polished surfaces gives the scene a sculptural depth, capturing the rhythmic pull of open water.
