Green Lead Crystal Glass Wahaika with a Pūkaiora (figure) on an Oak base | Mike Cameron
Traditionally, a short 2-edged weapon of stone, wood or bone, tapering in thickness. It was designed to give a crushing, rather than a cutting blow. It was used to strike the opponent's chest, head or wrist. Many Wahaika had a small figure carved on their side, called a Pūkaiora. This represented their tribal God of War who would guard over the warrior during battle.
This Contemporary Glass Wahaika is adorned with Pukeko Feathers bound with a natural waxed cord. This is a unique piece of art produced through a complex cast glass process.
This piece is made from Green 40% Lead Crystal Gaffer glass. The patterns of Celtic spirals symbolize both the inner and outer worlds and the themes of birth, death and rebirth, as well as the unity of mental, physical and spiritual self.
This piece is carved with a single spiral, one of the most common symbols of Celtic culture and Maori. The single spiral stands for the radiance of external or cosmic energy. It symbolizes growth, birth, expansion of consciousness, perseverance and knowledge. These thoughts show how nature has shaped different cultures' beliefs to share similar ideas.
The work sits on a base of upcycled Oak and is finished with linseed oil, the green represents the colour of the land and is part of a tri series of work alongside a white patu for sky and blue for the ocean.
