EPISODE 1
Our series delving into the finer points of the work our artists produce kicks off with Candy Clarke.
Melanie-Jane talks us through how Candy's joyful works take shape.

M-J: The extraordinary Candy Clarke from Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand.
Her work is amazing. It may be a technique that you haven’t viewed before. I can tell you a little bit about it.

Left: Melanie-Jane in the gallery. Right: Candy with a work-in-progress.
Candy uses acrylic paint on the back of acrylic - so the painting is on the reverse side of Perspex.

Candy invariably starts with the foreground first and works her way to the background. The Perspex wraps around from the top down to the bottom of the artwork.
What gets me is that everything is painted backwards, including words and sentences.

Everything is painted backwards, onto the reverse side of perspex. The soft, fluid nature of the formed acrylic creates a dance of reflections that animate your space.
This fabulous work ‘Promises Promises’ is about all those remedies out there that are going to do the trick; make you look young or youthful, get rid of brain fog. How you get your quick fix.
I love this little bit “10 things rich women do but keep secret. Log on for details or get the app”.

The soft, fluid nature of the formed acrylic creates a dance of reflections that animate your space. As you move past, it’s not just the bold graphics and vibrant hues that capture the eye, but the undulating reflections that bring the piece to life.
I absolutely adore Candy's work, it’s so fun and so clever.
