Kia Kaha, Be Kind | Lester Hall
From his studio in Kerikeri, printmaker Lester Hall creates visually striking artwork that is layered with detail, strongly political, and often serves as a great conversation starter.
"Ettrick, Dumbarton, Bannockburn, all names from the stories my father told of his very austere childhood in the Depression era Otago. Dad got his first pair of shoes and first full time job at twelve years of age working on Aoraki Mount Cook. He was walking 4 gallon cans of kerosine up to the huts a child. He said the Keas were great characters, if not loved by all and remembered them sliding down the tin roofs of huts, crashing off the edge to the snowy ground below. A Kea's jaunty gate says it all… leave nothing to chance because they will have it, eat it, destroy it, play with it, kill it. This is the World's only mountain parrot, the devilishly wonderful Kea. I am naming him Sydney after my dad who rode a motorbike like there was no tomorrow, just like a Kea would. I have recreated my kea into a stamp version as another post COVID-19 exaltation to all kiwis to be kind and stand strong".
