Ngati Maniapoto-Raukawa, Ngati Whawhakia, Ngati Pikiao
Gaylene has been weaving for approximately fifteen years and tributes her learning to her mother, Matekino Lawless and sister Christina Hurihia Wirihana.
Gaylene particularly enjoys weaving Kete Whakairo, using harakeke harvested from the Paaharakeke where her mother resides in Rotoiti. This established Paaharakeke has served many a project over the years and has become more meaningful to Gaylene since the day she started weaving.
The simplicity of Gaylene’s’ weaving, places emphasis on line and by the inclusion of contrasting elements contributes to highlighting technique and beauty.
