Kowhai Eel - C>2 | By Paula Coulthard.
The Eel Series was created in August and September 2021.
Paula lives in the Wairarapa and her landscape is veined with creeks, rivers and waterways. There is a creek running through her property and it is home to Long-fin Tuna, a species of Eel found only in New Zealand, not only native but endemic.
Paula's challenge was to capture the beauty, and darkness of the eels, while bringing warmth to them, without the scariness, to capture their monumental majesty, with respect.
Paula has been inspired by Bauhaus design and abstraction recently, so has applied this to the creative process.
This series is the first of 12 shapes of the “Eels” series.
The viewpoint is underwater with the eel as I attempt to catch the strength and flexibility Tuna.
Each piece is produced on Canvas and is framed.
